The following Presidents report was submitted at the meeting:

2022 was a busy year. Here are some of the highlights:

We had a Social event in Feb. 2022 to welcome new members and a Gala dinner was hosted at Don Pedro's Restaurant in March. We had a great dinner and a very successful auction. In the spring we did an ocean water testing which showed clean water.

Our beach Safety committee trained 25 new lifeguards in April and another 25 in December. We make about 40 rescues per month, so this is a very important program. We continue to push the government to fund more lifeguards, but this is an ongoing campaign to increase our beach safety.

We support many local charities from animals and turtles to the recycling program. As we have done for the past 10 years, we rent the government center that houses the tourist police, Ministerio Publico and the traffic police.

We did a lot of work during and after hurricane Rosalyn. Many houses were filled with mud and all their belongings were lost. Pro Sayulita furnished tractors and hauled away 200 dump trucks of mud. We recruited the National Guard and worked with alongside the other amazing Sayulita volunteers to shovel out houses and within 10 days Sayulita was fully open. We also offered our services to help manage and distribute the funds to those in need.

Before the tourist season began, we washed and sterilized the main streets in the downtown area. In December we had a Ranchero Party at Ruben's ranch to raise some funds and kick off the high season. In 2022 we also decided to partner with the Sayulita Surf club to drive and run what is now called the Pro Sayulita SUP Open. We worked with the tourism office to get licenses for the Pro Sayulita SUP Open and engaged in the planning and execution of the event which successfully happened in March 2023. We will continue to work with this team in future years with the goal of raising even more money for programs for town. In addition to all the internal programs that Pro Sayulita has, we also work in collaboration with many local associations in the conservation of the environment, its fauna and flora, such as Alianza Jaguar, Ser Su Voz, Azul Sayulita (recycling center), and others, trying to preserve the spirit and essence of the town and its surroundings. Likewise, after the success we had in 2021 stopping the updating of the development plan (which allowed buildings up to 8 levels), we are now also collaborating with different groups that try to avoid the excessive development of the area. This requires a lot of effort.

At present we have three projects in the pipeline, two of them awaiting permits from the authorities. Some of these will require additional fund raising.

1. Plan for the construction of garbage containers throughout the village.

2. Construction of a classroom for handicapped children and a covered basketball court in the elementary school.

 3. A major hurricane prevention project that includes retaining walls along the last 1.5 km of the river, the area most affected when the floods come.

In addition to this work, we are currently working on Forming a Mexican AC (non-profit) to enable us to approach larger Mexican donors and companies. The AC will allow us to offer tax receipts to donors and should attract larger corporations to give donations. This will also give us an advantage when pursuing sponsors for our now annual Pro Sayulita SUP Open.

Several questions were asked and here are the answers:

  1. Why has there been no water on Nanzal for the past few weeks? We thought a new well had been drilled.
ANSWER: Pro Sayulita does not manage the water in town, this is done by OROMAPAS. Although a new deeper well was drilled by OROMAPAS last year. Even though the well was drilled a second time, according to studies that were done in search of water three years ago, this season has been exceptionally dry. There is not enough water in the well. We have had no rain since October 2022.

  2. What is the situation with garbage in town?
ANSWER: We have been working with Girssa over the past few years to get a beVer handle on the garbage situation here in Sayulita. Girssa is the only entity that can collect garbage here. They have a contract with the municipality. The municipality pays Girssa from the collection of business taxes in town. We worked with others and have designs for trash bins and are awaiting permits for both the construction of the bins and placements for the bins. There will be a total of 14 different locations in town where garbage can be left. In addition, Girssa is working on obtaining a smaller vehicle that could service the Nanzal area.

As you can see, we have been and will continue to be very engaged with many aspects of life in Sayulita. We appreciate all your support and encourage you all to invite friends and family to become members of Grupo Pro Sayulita. Since 2020, we have seen a drop in memberships and funding so we would encourage you to help us continue to raise the funds that are what allows us to continue to support the many projects and initiatives that the town needs us to pursue. We could also really use a few larger investments in 2023.

All proceeds are tax deductible in the US and the new AC will enable more Mexican giving. To become a member, please click here.
